Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy
BLOOD WEDDING, CARMEN & EL AMOR BRUJO are all out on DVD April 23rd, 2012.
Carlos Saura is one of Spain’s most influential directors, heralded in particular for his exploration and use of the art of dance in films. The most famous of these is the Flamenco Trilogy – a pre-cursor to last year’s Pina, from Wim Wenders – made up of Blood Wedding, Carmen and El Amor Brujo.
Choreographed by Saura and his leading man, world-reknowned Flamenco dancer Antonio Gades, the films were international hits, with CARMEN winning two prizes at Cannes in 1983 and the BAFTA in 1985 for Best Foreign Film.
Carmen is undoubtedly a stunner of a film, gripping you from the first shot of the man searching a hoarde of dancers for his Carmen. There is something exceptionally sexy about Flamenco and the undercurrent of heat steams throughout the film.
Antonio Gades is an exceptional dancer with an incredible talent, fronting an impressive cast of Flamenco dancers that it’s hard not to remain spellbound throughout them all.
Carlos Saura will be in the UK this April to mark the launch of this amazing collection. He is participating in a Masterclass at the Ciné Lumière on Thursday 19th April, 6.30pm start. This will be followed by a screening of CARMEN on Sunday 22nd April.
