Erupting on screens everywhere 11th July, Magic Mike is not for the faint hearted or those who are easily shocked. Channing Tatum displays his considerable talents as stripper Mike who finds himself at a life changing moment in his career. Having headlined the male revue run by Dallas (Matthew McConaughey), a split second decision to introduce the young and inexperienced Kid (Alex Pettyfer) triggers the end of his dancing days. Faced with a growing disillusionment and waning prospects, Mike meets The Kid’s sister Brooke. It’s not long before he realises that his job is doing more than just getting in the way…
‘Money, women and a good time’, is the tag line for Magic Mike, a rather sordid tale of sex, drugs and thongs a plenty. Anyone who has dared take a peek into the world of male stripping (cough cough) would tell you that what we see on screen in this film is actually fairly tame, but even what’s there could be a little too hot for some people! Having witnessed first hand the sheer mental lunacy that some women can muster up when facing a handful of naked and/or semi naked men (albeit well toned and glistening, so hardly surprising), there is a a definite control to the women in this film. although perhaps that’s America for you. It is said that male strippers in the USA have a poor reputation compared to their female stripping counterparts (something that is reversed in this country) but I did wonder at the sheer scale of drinking and drug taking portrayed in Magic Mike. I haven’t met a stripper who didn’t spend at least 3 hours in the gym every day along with dance lessons etc, as well as sticking to a diet so rigid and specific that it would make Madonna proud. But hey… this is a movie, not a documentary.
Certainly fun; definitely entertaining, what Magic Mike lacks in character development it makes up for in fabulous dance routines and gorgeous bodies. One for the ladies this Summer, I defy you not to come away with a grin on your face. Just leave the man at home and enjoy…
